The WHY Initiative Inc. mentoring organization was founded in 2017 in response to a need to improve the quality of life for low-income, underserved, disadvantaged and at- risk children, youth and families in the Jackson MS metropolitan area. The WHY Initiative’s mission is to improve the community through Wealth, Health and our Youth. Founded by Antonio Knight, Kinoy Brown and Candace Mayes, they were brought together by a common belief t

hat many youths in their communities lacked meaningful academic and career guidance.

Field Day Recap During the quarterly period the students participated in four field days. The students learned the importance of tilling, mulching, and fertilizing their crops. They learned the impact winter weather can have on specific fruits and vegetables, and the significance of a high tunnel/hoop house. After hands-on experience tilling the land, the students were split into two teams to assemble raised bed grow boxes.

In the weekly Zoom sessions, the students received valuable knowledge on the introduction to farming, how to start a farming business, farm recordkeeping and the finances of farming. We want to equip the students with the knowledge and experience to not only garden and farm, but also how to run a successful farm business.

A special thanks to Cottenball Express Farm operated by Robert Cotten Sr. in Madison, MS for allowing the kids to use their land to learn. Robert Cotten Sr. a farmer with over 60 years experience along with Antonio Knight Sr. our Educational Facilitator works closely with the students to share their years of experience in the farming business.
